Today! i'm proud to present this first interview with NYC's upcoming emcee, S'natra.

                 

                                            MR. Owl aka Yannik Pyton

"S'natra, the Harlem, NY born & raised MC, has been drawing inspiration from artists like Jay-Z, Notorious BIG, Outkast, Nas & The Roots which helped him create a new style of lyricism & wordplay that allowed him develop his own sound. He's performed at many NYC venues such as S.O.B.'s (sponsored by The Source Magazine & Hot 97), Sullivan Hall & The New Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, NY. He is part of the collective, H.O.M.E (High Off Music Entertainment) and released his first full length project on January 10, 2012, titled "The Intermission."

  

1.(Mr. Owl) Introduce yourself to the world !

1.(S'natra) What's good yall I'm S'natra, a Harlem born & raised MC & part of H.O.M.E (High Off Music Entertainment) 

2. When and why did you decide to start rapping ?

2. I started rapping around the 6th grade when I met Microphone Preview. He was the inspiration for me to start rhyming cause the way he captured people with his words and got his message across was mind blowing. It was also around the time I actually started following Hip-Hop so it was all a blessing all at once.

3. What are your future project and what can we expect for 2011- 2012 ?

3. I'm working on my next project right now titled, Habits 'til Roses. Got a few songs done and you can expect to see my H.O.M.E brothers on that tape. I've learned a lot from the people around me since the first project dropped and you're gonna see a different side of S'natra on this. 

4. What about touring, do you plan to do a tour outside the states ?

4. No solid tour dates right now, but show opportunities come up all the time so hopefully everything works out and my management can make that happen. My bro Perrion is headlining a show April 12th at the Velvet Jones in Santa Barbara that I'll definitely be at and perform some songs with him which I'm looking forward to.

5. What are your thoughts, on the Hip-Hop scene right now ?

5. I feel Hip-Hop is in a transition right now. A lot of new up & coming rappers are adding more diversity to the game and keeping it interesting. More people are becoming fans of Hip-Hop again everyday because there's  something for everyone. From production to lyrical content, it's all headed in a new direction.

6. Who and what are your  inspiration to making music ?

6. The artists that make up H.O.M.E all influence me because they're so dope at what they do. They believe in the shit they make and put out and that keeps me motivated to make the best music I can; All the people that downloaded The Intermission also keep me going cause it makes me see that people really fuck with my music.

7. What have been the ups and downs since you started making music ?

7. There's always things like finding studios and coming up with money to make shit happen, but it's part of the experience of going after that one passion. The ups of course is being able to see that people really like the music and support it enough to motivate me to make more of that good shit.

8. Recently you released a project called "The Intermission"(very dope project by the way) ,

how was the project received ?

8. A lot better than I thought actually. Didn't think that at this point almost 1,000 people have downloaded it and people knitpick about numbers but that's a lot of fuckin people to me. Shouts to all of yall!

8.5 What was the first lp/cd/cassette and or mixtape you ever bought

with your own money ?

8.5 Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z. It was around the time when I actually started listening to Hip-Hop instead of just hearing it. After that cd, I got more into music and everything took off from there.

9. How do you spoil yourself ?

9. I like to look through mad old vinyls and research music and shit just trying to find a new sound or something outside of my norm. Other than that i'll kick back with the homies & get fucked up.

10. Talk about your hometown ?

10. If it wasn't for New York City, I wouldn't be myself. Everyone talks about New York and has their own thoughts about it, but like Frank said, "you make it here, you make it anywhere."

11. Who's been supporting you in your career?

11. All of my fam and people in my hood that I grew up with really support the music which is cool cause I was that kid that was afraid to spit for everybody. After I got over that though, it was like, "shit this kid got some bars."

12. What do you think his overrated in the rap game?

12. Shit I don't know. I do think H.O.M.E is underrated and ya'll need to download all our mixtapes though, haha.

13. Who do you think is the best producer alive?

13. I don't have a single best producer, but J Dilla is that nigga. Now & forever. Rest In Power.

14. Who would be your ideal diner guest, living or dead, and what

would you serve them + what music would you play?

14. Shit I don't know how to cook so we'd probably order some shit, but I'd love to sit down with B.I.G & Pac. Those two single handled changed hip-hop around the time when I was getting into it and it was always more than music to me with them. They had the bangers but they also had messages for the people. It was real shit that till this day I can't really describe like that.

(Mr. Owl ) 1. Would you please give a quick introduction of yourself for people who don't know you.

(Praverb) Well, my name is Patrick aka Praverb the Wyse and I have been rhyming for about 10-12 years (just starting to take it seriously hehe). Praverb is a friend, jester, husband, uncle, and more. 

2. How did your music career start?

Well honestly my career started via a message board (Rapmusic.com). I was interested in poetry and hip-hop yet I never had an outlet to channel the energy that I had inside. I had a few friends that rhymed and I would freestyle with them all the time.  

When I first signed up for Rapmusic.com, I went there to work on my writing technique and stuff. I could flow yet the website opened me up to a variety of rappers who presented and introduced me to advanced techniques (that is why I have an appreciation for technical emcees).

3. What are your future projects and what can we expect for 2012- 2013?

Well honestly the future projects keep changing. I would love to release two or three projects this year. I definitely want to complete another installment of The Gospel is Free Series and probably work on some projects for BlueBottle Records. 

I am thankful that I will be a part of some dope vinyl releases this year. I will be a part of a vinyl release by Blunted Astronaut Records with Dirty Treats and another vinyl from Dj Grazzhoppa and Smimooz. 

4. What about touring, do you plan to do a tour outside the states, or maybe even over seas?

This is a tricky question. I would love to tour the States and I would also like to tour overseas. Touring is problematic because it does not make sense financially considering my name by itself does not equate to a big draw. Now if I get the opportunity to tour with someone then it would be awesome. 

I have been trying for years to tour. I just have to be patient and continue to network. 

5. Who are your role models?

I have a plethora of role models that influence me. Most notably my father. I am a mirror image of my dad and we possess similar ideas, thoughts on life, and more. He is my ultimate role model. My wife also inspires me. She is so kind, tolerant of my hobby, and does not pass judgement. Ria and Rissa, Jessica + Aldo, Glen Adams, Darnell Monteforte, David Mitchell, Lewis Mitchell, and more motivate me on a personal level. I have a lot of friends and family that inspire me and it would take forever to list them. 

Musically I would have to say that Don Streat (waddup Damon), Cane, Idiomz, Emcee Nemesis, Promise, Dirty Hairy, LX Beats, Hosie, Dj Grazzhoppa, ILLUS, ST/MiC, Cayoz, Kingverse, Alex Larenas, Sourface, Keor Meteor, Theology 3, Tef Wesley, Lady Essence, Nametag, and Spoonfull inspire me the most. The people that I mentioned have responsibilities yet they continue to pursue their dreams. It is very motivational. 

Cas Metah, Mina Leon, and M-Dot inspire me with their independent attitude and their ability to strive for success given limited resources. I am fans of their music and movement and I also value their input. 

Blog wise I would say that you inspire me, Kevin Nottingham inspires me, Witaji from UCTL inspires me, Deerok Pabon inspires me, the rejection from 2DopeBoyz and Dj Booth inspires me haha. Basically a variety of things inspire me. I have learned to take the good and the bad. 

6. Who and what is your biggest inspiration to making music?

Well my biggest inspiration to making music is life and being able to learn from everyone that I encounter. I believe that everyone possesses knowledge based on his or her life experience. It is great to share that knowledge haha. 

7. What have been the ups and downs since you started making music?

Well the ups and downs that I have encountered with music are based on the journey to be heard and respected. 

8. What's the meanest thing ever said to you before, during, or after a gig?

Well I do not remember. The thing that gets on my nerves revolves around labels and how people are quick to place someone in a label. I am a Christian that happens to rhyme. Nothing more, nothing less. When you frequent my site you will notice that I may post music that may be explicit. I listen to a lot of music and I gain something from everything that I listen to.

On the flip side, I do not curse or degrade women, yada yada in my music. It is more a personal choice because I value the power of words (I can say more without cursing). 

9. What was the first LP/CD/Cassette and or mixtape you ever bought with your own money?

Honestly I do not have a clue. It probably was a West Coast album, I was heavy into the whole West Coast gangster vibe when I lived in San Diego with my foster family. 

10. How do you spoil yourself?

I spoil myself by eating. I love food. Pizza, hamburgers, pasta, food glorious food! I also spoil myself by buying camera equipment haha. 

11. Talk about your home town 

Honestly I do not remember that much from my home town. My father was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina and that is where I was born. Unfortunately I do not remember anything from those years haha. 

12. Who's been supporting you in your career? 

My wife, my mother and father, my brother, Darnell Monteforte (waddup homie), Sourface, Hosie, Cas Metah, Dirty Hairy, Politiks, Tef Wesley, David Mitchell, Spoon, LX Beats, M-Dot, Rev, and many more. 

My wife and her best friend Jessica have been along for the ride the longest. Vanessa and Jessica supported me when I barely knew how to flow haha. I love them and I appreciate their support. 

Matt Stromer, Marlon (Kidmar), Rafal from Popkiller, Joshua Decker, Face One, Teddy Roxpin, Taylor Gaddy, Dj EZ, and others have supported my journey as well. I am thankful for all the fans, friends, and colleagues that I have met along the way. Forgive me if I forget some names (grey hairs haha). 

13. What do you think is overrated in the rap game?

I think that views, plays, etc are overrated. A good artist is a good artist regardless of how many views they have on YouTube, or how many plays or downloads they have. People are attracted to numbers and sadly numbers equate to popularity. 

A lot of talented emcees and beatmakers are overlooked because they are not apart of the "numbers" game. Praverb Dot Net is the place for those artists that are overlooked. I do not have the brand recognition or notoriety of the bigger blogs but I do provide individuality, I do listen to the music, and most importantly I promote what I like haha. 

14. Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them + what music would you play?

Bill Cosby haha. I would play the Cosby theme over and over and over until he gets tired of it.

2.What is Silent Hornetz and what are you doing in the group?


Silent Hornetz we are a Golden Era Hip-Hop group, we formed in 2010.


3.What are your future project and what can we expect for 2011- 2012?

We realeased the debut Album “ Emancipation of Analog” in November 2011. Future projects consist of “CornBread” the Mixtape looking to drop in May 2012. Also a J.Dilla tribute “Powdered Donuts” for the near future.


 4. What about touring, do you plan to do a tour outside the states?


Most definitely , just trying to make the right moves and get connected with the right people, that can be a asset give us the opportunity to pave our own way.


 5.What are your thoughts, on the Hip-Hop scene right now!


Really the Hip-Hop scene across the U.S. has been dry lately, everybody wants to be commercial,listening to certain cats in the game it’s like I hear no hunger in their music.




6.Who do you think is the best producer alive?


 Hard question , but a few that catch the ear in no certain rank would have to be Pete Rock, Dj premier, Rza, Bronze Nazareth, Black Milk, Endemic, aww man the list goes on of course J.Dilla,……


 7. Recently you released a project called "Emancipation Of analog"(very dope project by the way) ,       how was it created? 


aww man it was very exciting working on the project…… thanks to KSlack ,CG Muzik, DomBeats , RZR, for the production…… we put that project together in 6 months.

1.(Mr.Owl) First and foremost, who is Virghost Memphiasco?

 (Virghost Memphiasco) I am a Emcee/Spoken Word Artist from The Bluff City, Memphis, Tennessee representing my SQUAD., Point Blank Entertainment. I am a father, husband, brother, son, and Human Being that just happens to be blessed with the gift of poetry.  Above all, Virghost is a POET...which sums up all of that in one word.

2. When and why did you decided to start rapping?

  I always wanted to rap since I was a freshman in High School, but I was too scared to spit my rhymes to anyone so I would just write my raps down on paper and call it poetry.  It was my way to escape all of the negative things that I was going through at the time...a way to get things off my chest.  I would let people read them and they would ask me why I wasn't rapping and encourage me to start.  I didn't actually start rapping until 2008 after my cousin and fellow Memphis Emcee Knowledge Nick asked me to do a Spoken Word intro to his first mixtape "The Appetite for Knowledge."  The track was called "Food 4 Thought."  After I recorded the track I overheard one of the tracks that was going on his project called "Higher Ground."  The original version featured Nick and his Memphis Boy production lablemates Quake the Great,  Fever (formerly known as Novacane), and Memphis Boy Productions CEO Brandon "901" Paige.  I was so in love with the beat that I asked Nick to let me hop on, and he said yeah.  So I wrote and recorded my first 16 a couple of days later.  901 was so impressed with my first that he put on his label and from there the rest was history.

3. What are your future projects and what can we expect for 2011- 2012 ?

  Right now I'm working on a new project entitled "Innermission Intuitions."  I named it that because it's like my loose thoughts in-between my last album and my next album.  It's not an album itself, but it's also not a mixtape...I don't know what to call it.  I guess it's more like an experiment.  It's totally different from my last release, "The Memphiasco" because it goes more "outside the box."  On "The Memphiasco" I took you around the world.  On "Innermission Intuitions" I'm taking you to another galaxy!  This project also has more guest features than The Memphiasco and new producers.  It's gonna be EPIC I promise.  I'm also planning a BIG Hip-Hop show here for the Memphis Hip-Hop scene in February..."The Memph-Hop Winter Jam."  Guaranteed to be THE best Hip-Hop show of 2012 in Memphis.  And I plan on pushing the SQUAD. brand heavily this year.  And if you don't know what that means, then you WILL know soon!!!

4. What about touring, do you plan to do a tour outside the states?

  Oh most definitely!!! I just booked a show in Nashville for next month and I'm working on Little Rock, Indianapolis, and Atlanta.  I've done a shows in Indianapolis and Oklahoma City before a couple of years back and both cities showed me mad love...Can't wait to get back on the road again.  Hopefully we can make that Canada trip happen! lol

5. What are your thoughts, on the Hip-Hop scene right now!

  Well, if we are talking about Memphis, as a whole I think that the scene here is doing pretty well.  There are a lot of dope Emcees in our city making a lot of local and national noise.  The only problem I have is when "certain emcees" in the city place themselves on these imaginary pedestals like they are signed to Def Jam or Interscope or something...I hate when artists proclaims to be things like "Gods" or "Kings" when they have accomplished absolutely nothing .  They got this false sense of celebrity when in actuality they are only local starving artists.  Egos can be a mothafucka in small city like Memphis.  But other than that...I really like what's going on in Memphis as far as Hip-Hop is concerned.  On a national level, I think that we are witnessing a "New Golden Era" of Hip-Hop.  There are SO MANY dope new artists coming out right now...Artists like Kendrick Lamar and the whole Black Hippy Movement, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf, A$AP Rocky...man it's so many!!! There is mos def a change going on in Hip-Hop right now and I love it!

6. Who and what are your  inspiration to making music?

  My biggest inspiration has to be my wife and kids.  They give my art purpose and reason.  Before I got married and had kids I just rapped to prove a point; to show people that I am a dope emcee.  Nowadays, I don't care about any of that.  I'm just trying to bring a positive message to the world through my art.  Outside of my family, I would have to say Nas and Marvin Gaye.  I think that they are the two dopest artists of all-time.  Locally, I think that my biggest inspiration has to be my SQUAD., Point Blank Entertainment.  The talent and competition within our group most definitely driven me become the Emcee that I am today.

7. What have been the ups and downs since you started making music?

  I think that my biggest down musically was December 2009 and the whole year of 2010.  I went on an unwanted hiatus.  My lights in my apartment had just got cut off.  My wife (fiance at the time) had to move with her sister and I had no where to go so I slept in my cold apartment during a time when the temperature in Memphis was below zero.  Me and my wife eventually moved with my parents until we got on our feet but that didn't last long at all.  Me and my dad don't get along staying in the same house so you know how that goes.  As far as the highs go, I've had so many.  My album release was probably the most special thing because I worked so hard and put my all into the album and the show.

8. Recently you released a project called "The Memphiasco",how was the project received?

  It was received extremely well in my city.   I got way more feedback than I expected.  I had so many people calling me, messaging me, coming up to me at shows telling me how they really like my album.  I even had a couple of people tell me that my album was the best album they had heard this year anywhere!  One dude posted a status on his Facebook page saying that the only albums he's been listening to was J. Cole's "Cold World," Wale's "Ambition," and Virghost's "The Memphiasco."  I was like, damn!  It felt good to be mentioned with national artists like that. 

8.5 What was the first lp/cd/cassette and or mixtape you ever bought

with your own money?

  Man I don't even remember.  I think I bought Mos Def's "The New Danger" and Talib Kweli's "Beautiful Struggle."  Before that, I was just bootlegging everything I listened to.  lol

9. How do you spoil yourself?

  To be honest, I can't spoil myself anymore because I'm too busy spoiling my daughters.  But, when I do get a chance I like to vibe and listen to music and smoking on a clove cigarette.

10. Talk about your hometown (Memphis)?

  I love my city.  I know a lot people have a lot of bad things to say about it but all in all, I like living here.  It has it's ups and downs.  It has it's ignorance and stupidity, but it also has good down to earth people and a rich music history.  I wouldn't claim any other city over.  AND YA SAY BLUFF CITY!!!!

11. Who's been supporting you in your career?

  The three main people that I can say that have supported me to the fullest since day one is my wife Megan Somerville, my cousin Sonya Somerville, and my SQUAD.bro Denario "Yayo" Dodson.  They have always been there with me on this roller coaster ride critiquing me and showing me encouragement, keeping me levelheaded and on my toes.

12. What do you think his overrated in the rap game?

  I think that Odd Future is TOTAL overrated.  Tyler the Creator is all right but the rest of them niggaz is wack!!! I also think that a couple of artists from Memphis that get a lot of shine on the local and national stage are VERY overrated but I won't get on that.  Don't want to ruffle nobodies feathers.

13. Who do you think is the best producer alive?

  It's hard to really say that there is a "best" producer because there are so many great ones with so many different styles.  But I will say that my two favorite producers are 9th Wonder and 40.

14. Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what

would you serve them + what music would you play?

  Dr. King.  I would server him a Tostinos Pizza and play the whole Memphiasco album. lol

1.First and foremost who is King Ra?

  King RA is a Hip Hop purist, REVOLUTIONARY ARTIST. Fan first & MC after.

2.Could you explain the meaning of your name?

  Ra is a nickname my cousin Wiz gave me around 1998 because so many people kept saying my name wrong,needless to say the name stuck. When i started recording songs in 2002 I decided Ra would be the name I use artist as well. In 2008 I added King to my name because someone called me "King Ra" & I felt it was fitting for a king. That's when who I am as an MC started to make sense. King is what I acknowledge myself as. We are all are kings & queens, it's a choice we make to fill those royal shoes or not. Ra is the Egyptian Sun God & I equate myself to Ra in the sense I shed light & bring heat to the microphone. RA in caps was added for emphasis like it's being yelled. RA = Revolutionary Artist. RA = Rhyme Animal. I decided Ra would be the name I use "as an" artist as well.

3.When did you start rapping?

   I started rapping way back in 6th grade but i didn't start taking my craft seriously til 2007.

4.What are your future project and what can we expect for 2011- 2012 ?

  Right now Foot On They Necks V.1 is out there circulating, I'm shooting the video for my second single off that 7 relaesing it January 2012. I have a bunch of projects lined up for the new year as well. Gonna drop an EP produced by Tokyo Cigar, Foot On They Necks V.2, a album produced by Chopzilla, a gang of features & if I can work on my self produced album I will.  

5. What about touring, do you plan to do a tour outside the states?

   Touring is most certainly in the very near future. No dates have been set yet. I'm working on it. My schedule is open & I'm ready to travel. My passport is ready for stamps.

6.Who are some of your influences and who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

   Every dope MC from the Golden Era influenced me in some way or another. It would be amazing to collab with artists like Sean Price, Redman, Ghostface Killah, Styles P in the future, to name a few. 

7. Who and what are your  inspiration to making music?

  The people I talk to who do & go through real things inspire me. Everything I see & experience serves as inspiration for me to create the music i make. I will go as far as saying that all the garbage music the radio plays is a huge inspiration for me to make original joints that remain true to who I am as an artist. 

8. What have been the ups and downs since you started making music?

   There have been more downs than ups that were important to my evolution as an MC. The largest downfall for me was rolling with people who was not as serious as I am about making great music & putting it out to be heard. Waiting for other people to get motivated is not how to be successful at anything *lesson learned*. I feel like the ups are just starting to happen now with me not waiting & going for it. Being recognized & appreciated for the music I create is the best. Once some money starts rolling in *POW* then I'll feel really up. Ha

9. What's the meanest thing ever said to you before during or after a gig?

   There has never been any negative things said to me during or after a show. I will say the first real show I did, there was judges there. After I performed one said "I wasn't commercial enough" the other said "Tighten up your stage show" & the third said "I have potential. I took the constructive criticism & step it up. Otherwise, opinions are like assholes everybody got one so I don't worry bout that.

10 What was the first lp/cd/cassette and or mixtape you ever bought

with your own money?

   The first tape I bought was a Chubb Rock - Treat Em Right (maxi-cassette single) in 1990. I let that tape rock til the tape popped like so many of my cassettes back then. Lmao

11.How do you spoil yourself?

   I spoil myself by eating great food. Great food makes me happy (lol). Also, I gotta stay fly so I def spoil myself with gear & kicks as much as possible.

12.Jersey City (your hometown) in 10 words?

   The place I love but it's not enough love at.

13.Who's been supporting you and your career?

   Up until recently it has been me supporting me & my career. The fact that I am supporting myself & most importantly making good music is granting the opportunity for others to see I'm a serious artist. Great blogs such as yours (Runaway Owl), friends, & hip hop purists are starting to support my art which I greatly appreciate.

14.Who do you think is the best MC alive?

   I think this is such a broad question.There is no best MC. The best MC's are great at what they do. Besides that I haven't heard every MC to fairly answer that. I can say: I am the best at what I do though.

15.Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what

would you serve them + what music would you play?

   My ideal dinner guest would be my father Ronald Mason who died in 1986. I would enjoy talking to my dad now & hearing what gems he'd drop on me  It would probably be some type of vegetarian meal & the background music would be him playing the guitar (he was a problem on the strings).
